Research & Drafting

Before starting on the design and build for this project, I utilized online resources to research the latest statistics on honey bee populations and conditions. I massaged this collected information into a concise set of data points and structured it into a comprehensive timeline. I then broke the timeline up into twelve sections that would later become the individual scenes in my animated infographic.

Next, I began framing how each scene would play out and what content I still had left to build. I wanted the images used to be simple as to not distract from text. I sketched out a rough design of how each scene would look before incorporating movement and scene transitions. The transitions were planned around an object expanding to color the next background scene. For example, in the first scene a black plate expands to fill the next scene with a black colored background.

Building the Design

The goal of this animation was to create an overall look that was interesting while still using a limited color palette and simple imagery. The information communicated through this animation textually was my main focus. I represented the data and statistics graphically through the use of imagery that lent itself to the fluid movement of the animation. Of utmost importance in any animation is timing. The speed of each frame transition was adjusted to achieve a balance between what my brief dictated (90 seconds maximum length of animation) while allowing my potential clients the time to read the information. If I were to expand on this project in the future, I would like to tweak the timing of each frame and also add audio.
